Blanket detective

The night had turned to morning and the morning had turned to night. Despite passing along all the clues she had found, the fatigue and weariness remained.

She thought she had caught him by now, the paw prints were like bread crumbs on the floor and maybe, just maybe, by innocently following them along she’d come face to face with the beast who had been snatching all the blankets.

She took one corner, then the next and then one more. Crooked corners, crumbling cobblestones and muddy puddles. She knew she was hot on his tail; the prints were fresh and judging by the surrounding footsteps someone other than her was giving chase too.

Someone in heels. Someone with a similar foot to hers. Someone with the same shoes as hers.

She stopped in place and a slow realisation dawned upon her.

The same puddles, the same corners, the same cobblestone floor…

She had been running around in circles.

She let out another sigh and tapped her head against the lamppost once again.

Maybe if she tapped long enough, she would be able to forget the memory of last night.
